La Belle Dame Sans Merci - A Ballad by John Keats

O WHAT can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
  Alone and palely loitering?
The sedge has wither’d from the lake,
  And no birds sing.
II.

O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms!
        5
  So haggard and so woe-begone?
The squirrel’s granary is full,
  And the harvest’s done.
III.

I see a lily on thy brow
With anguish moist and fever dew,        10
And on thy cheeks a fading rose
  Fast withereth too.
IV.

I met a lady in the meads,
  Full beautiful—a faery’s child,
Her hair was long, her foot was light,        15
  And her eyes were wild.
V.

I made a garland for her head,
  And bracelets too, and fragrant zone;
She look’d at me as she did love,
  And made sweet moan.        20
VI.

I set her on my pacing steed,
And nothing else saw all day long,
For sidelong would she bend, and sing
  A faery’s song.
VII.

She found me roots of relish sweet,
        25
And honey wild, and manna dew,
And sure in language strange she said—
  “I love thee true.”
VIII.

She took me to her elfin grot,
And there she wept, and sigh’d fill sore,        30
And there I shut her wild wild eyes
  With kisses four.
IX.

And there she lulled me asleep,
And there I dream’d—Ah! woe betide!
The latest dream I ever dream’d        35
  On the cold hill’s side.
X.

I saw pale kings and princes too,
  Pale warriors, death-pale were they all;
They cried—“La Belle Dame sans Merci
  Hath thee in thrall!”        40
XI.

I saw their starved lips in the gloam,
  With horrid warning gaped wide,
And I awoke and found me here,
  On the cold hill’s side.
XII.

And this is why I sojourn here,
        45
  Alone and palely loitering,
Though the sedge is wither’d from the lake,
  And no birds sing.

this is the most suitable tittle of this poem, because the beautiful lady in this poem cheated the speaker without any kind of feelings. The poem gives a hint that the lady already cheated so many peoples like kings and princes, so we can say that the lady have a bad attitude of cheating. So the choice of the tittle is very apt to the poem. The functioning is also systematically cleared .

  2. La Belle Dame sans Merci, one of John Keats last works, is a ballad which tells the story of a knight who fell in love with a mystical creature, and now suffers the aftermath of a broken heart
The poem starts with the speaker finding a solitary knight unsteadily walk around country side. He saw a lady. She was the most beautiful lady in his eyes. He felt love her at the first sight. He tried to woo her. At that time speaker thinking about her how is she and where she came from? In the last, he realize that lady is an actual fairy, super natural being that knight has fallen in love with him, fairy lady trapped the speaker.
Finally, we conclude that this poem is an unusual format for a normal poem structure and it is a heart touch poem

  3. We can see gender bias in the poem La Belle Dame Merci. In this poem keats tells about the story of a knight deceived by a charming woman. The theme of the poem is the unrequired love. Most of the poem creates the gents as the looser in their poem at the same time in this poem also keats creates the knight as the looser. The image of women as deceptive in love is common in English literature but not so in other languages as Malayalam. It cannot have any powerful effect on the readers, for the real world is entirely different from the imaginary world portrayed in literature. 1- B C : 11, 24, 34, 37 ,40 ,42.

In the poem La Belle Dame Merci the poet tells about the story of a knight deceived by a charming woman. The theme of the poem is unrequired love , and the pain and sufferingof one who loves but is not loved in return.Through this lines the poet describes how he had been bewitched by her charm, the edible roots and honey she gave him,and by her meledious song.
The lady took the knight to a tiny cave. There she heaved sorrowful sighs, and tears trickled down her cheeks. With great sympathy the knight kissed away her tears, two kisses for each eye.
"Grot"is poetical for " grotto",cave or sheltered summer house.

  4. La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a balled by English romantic poet, John Keats. He tells the story of a knight who fell in love with a pretty girl. After met her he was in a dream world and he gave everything to her but finally she cheated him.
In this poem the archaic words (ail thee,haggard,woe-begone,faery's song, manna drew, woe betide, hath thee, horrid.) used to indicate the time in which the events takes place. These words modify the beauty of fairy story. They functions as symbolic and it makes the language of poem different.
