A
BRIEF HISTORY
The Department of
English was instituted at Government College Mananthavady in 1981 along with
the establishment of the College. But
the college commenced Under Graduate Programme in English Language and
Literature in 1993 paving way for the formal setting up of the Department of
English. This is the only Government College in Wayanad district affiliated to
Kannur University that is offering BA in English Language and Literature. To feather its cap, a Language Lab was
instituted in the year 2006. 18 batches have graduated from the department
until 2013. Our students have become the ambassadors of the rich legacy and
heritage of the culture and education, which Government College Mananthavady
imparts, across the world. Since its inception, the department has been playing
a key role in bettering the English education of the student community of
Wayanad, augmenting the reputation of GCM and enhancing the employability and
worldview of the students.

“Critiquing the Politics of Globalization: Activism and Commitment in the
Fiction and Non-fictions of Arundhati Roy” during the 12th Plan
Period(2010-12) with a funding of INR 1,45,000/-

Jayalakshmi, former student of the Department of English is the Minister of
State for Scheduled Castes, Youth Affairs and Museums since 2012.
Ø Chinmay Murali, the university topper of the
year 2012-13 for BA English Language and Literature is from the Department of
English, being one of the only two students who secured A grade in the
University.
Ø 8
students from the Department of English secured selection for the 21 days ASAP
training Programme in the year 2012-13.
Ø One student from the department of English has
secured admission in EFLU Hyderabad in the year 2012-13.
Ø Two
former students of the Department of English have cleared NET of UGC (Athira M.
S of 2008—9 batch and Sruthy of 2009-10 batch).
Ø Our

central University of Pondichery.
Ø The
Department of English has produced National Award Winners like Ajin K. K
(2010), who secured Ist place in the National Painting Competition.

IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Digital
Language Laboratory (A/C)
The Department hosts an
air-conditioned Digital Language Laboratory with 20 computers with the latest
software of ETNL. 19 learners can access the facility simultaneously through
the well furnished student consoles with headphone and microphones. Students
are exposed to the techniques of language development under the expert guidance
of trained faculty. It offers them opportunity to fine tune their language
skills and soft skills.
2.
High-speed
Broadband Internet with Wi-Fi Connectivity
Students and faculty of the
Department have access to high-speed broadband Internet Connectivity with Wi-Fi
facility which enables them to collect current data from various online
sources. It affords them with an edge over others in preparing dissertations,
seminar reports and assignments.
3.
INFLIBNET
Accessibility
All students have free access to
the huge online source of UGC’s INFLIBNET which enables them to explore
national and international journals and publications, download and print them
as per requirement.
4.
Department
Library
The Department has a good
collection of hand-picked books on subjects specifically germane to English
Language and Literature. The students can access books from this collection and
it facilitates academic interaction among students and faculty members.
5.
Smart-classrooms
All the classes are smart classes
with suspended projectors and interactive white boards which can be directly
connected to the internet. This facility offers students with audio-visual
experience and reinforces the learning process. It also provides them with
exposure to state of the art presentation techniques.
6.
Digital
Copiers, Scanners and Printers
The Department possesses high
quality digital printers, scanners and printers which are accessible to the
faculty as well as the students. They ensure speedy completion of project
reports, hand-outs and facilitates preservation of important data.
7.
HD
Movie Camera and Still Camera
The Department possesses a High
definition Movie Camera and a Still Camera which were procured to facilitate
the transaction of Film Studies in the Department. They are used to document
the important events in the college, and for making short films and
documentaries under the auspices of the college. Students are trained to handle
these contraptions efficiently, and it enables them to explore the
possibilities of visual media.

Intercom
Facility
The department is connected to all
the other departments, Library, Principals Chamber, Administrative Office, NAAC
room, Cooperative Store etc by means of Intercom facility.
9.
Sound
System with Collar and cordless Microphone
The Department owns a sound system
with collar microphones and cordless microphones which are used to enhance the
acoustics of the classrooms. They offer students opportunities to embellish the
grandeur of the department level programmes and reduce stage fear. Students are
given opportunity to handle and learn the technicalities of the system and it
improves their confidence level.
EXTENSION
ACTIVITIES/ADD-ON PROGRAMMES/OUTREACH PROGRAMMES
Ø Students
of the Department of English actively partake of the activities of NSS, NSS and
Bhoomitra sena Club in the college.
Ø Students
of the Department of English have contributed to the making of documentary on
the issues of tribal people of Wayanad.
Ø Our
students engage in educating the tribal dropouts under the auspices of NSS.
Ø Faculty
members of the Department of English serve as Master Trainers of Additional
Skill Acquisition Programme of Kerala.
Ø Faculty
from the Department of English has served as interview board members in the
selection process of ASAP trainees.
Ø The
Department provides facility for outsiders to use the Language Lab for training
(Kerala State Women Development Corporation, for example) and examinations of
SDE.
Ø Faculty
from the Department of English serves as Coordinator of the School of Distance
Education of Kannur University.
Ø Faculty
from the Department of English has served as Coordinator of Career Guidance and
Placement Cell in the college.
Ø Faculty
members of the Department of English serve as Presiding officers during
national and assembly elections.
Ø The
Department periodically conducts national and regional seminars which are of a
topical nature for the dissemination of ideas, and also participate and present
papers in seminars.
Ø The
faculty members as well as students publish scholarly articles in journals and
web sites.
CLUBS
AND ASSOCIATIONS RELATED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
1.
English
Association
Representatives
of the English Association are elected in a democratic fashion during the
college union election every year. The Association Secretary initiates the
activities of the Association, and convene meetings, Debates, Quiz Programmes
etc. and contribute to the programmes of College Day. Onam celebration,
publishing of Department magazine, observance of important days etc are
undertaken by the leadership of the Association. The present Secretary of the
association is Sri. Sayooj T. S.
2.
Alumni
Association
The
English Alumni Association works in close relation with the Alumni Association
of the college and contributes both financially as well as academically. The
President of the English Alumni Association is Miss. Sherin Francis, and the
Secretary is Sri. Abdul Rasheed. The treasurer is Sri. Muhammed Basher.
Recently, the English Alumni Association sponsored a Seminar on Film and
Documentaries (2011).
3.
Littchat,
a Little Magazine
The
Department of English brings out a little magazine with the literary
contributions of the students of the Department. So far three issues have been
brought out. The Head of the department is the Patron and Miss. Athira M. S is
the present Editor of the magazine.
4.
English
Association Wall Magazine
The
students of the department exhibit their write-ups on literary and other
subjects periodically in the wall magazine managed by the Secretary of English
Alumni Association.
Debate club, sports club, dance club, bhoomitrasena club, literary
club, drama club, film and documentary club, NSS, NCC etc…
BEST
PRACTICES
The Department has initiated a
blog, which is accessible not only to the students of the college but also to
the entire academic community across the globe. The blog provides notes and
slides on the syllabus of the programmes offered by the department, in addition
to useful links for further sources of information. It provides solved question
papers of the previous examinations and gives updated information on exams and
university news. It also hosts windows for spell bee, word of the day, popular
posts, writer of the day, quote of the day etc, and is still in the process of improvement.
This is also envisioned as an extension service of the department.
2.
ICT enabled classes
The classes are transacted through
ICT, so that they become more attractive and free from digression. It enhances
the quality of the classes as well as guarantees the attention of the students.
The power point slides and other visuals utilized in the classes are also
uploaded in the department blog for the later reference of the students.
3.
Author
of the Day
Every day, before the commencement
of the regular class, one student whose roll number coincides with the date of
the day, presents an author, his/her biographical details, important books,
major themes, techniques, concerns etc in a brief manner, so that students who
listen to the presenter get to know something about a writer. This gradually
makes the students acquainted with great writers.
4.
Word
of the Day
5 words are displayed on the
whiteboard in each class room every day so that students can enhance their word
power on a daily basis. Some students have volunteered to select and write down
the words on the boards, so that this practice is continued with the total
participation of the students.

FOR THE FUTURE
The department looks forward to materialize the
following ideas in the course of five years.
